Bay Mills is hiring a Fisheries assessment tech, an aquatic invasive spieces outreach student assistant, and and invasive species technician.
The Invasive Species Technician will be responsible for assisting the Invasive Species Specialist in surveying the Bay Mills Indian Community and surrounding areas for invasive plant species, treatment and control of invasive species, assist landowners by identifying invasive species on their property, and complete education materials and workshops for the community on invasive species. The Fishery Technician employee will assist the Bay Mills Biological Services Program Fishery Department during routine Great Lakes fish stock assessment and commercial harvest monitoring projects with a focus on the new Atikameg acoustic project in Whitefish Bay. This position will require the employee to perform tasks associated with deploying receiver arrays, assisting in fish surgeries, working with commercial fishers, deployment of various fisheries assessment gear, collecting and analyzing fishery data, maintaining gear and equipment, and various mechanical, electrical, and construction duties. The Aquatic Invasive Species Outreach Assistant will be responsible for staffing the Bay Mills mobile boat wash station to reduce the spread of invasive species. He/she will educate boaters on invasive species and will operate and maintain the pressure washer. He/she may also be responsible for assisting the Aquatic Biologist in field work, stream and beach water quality monitoring, and electrofishing. He/she may also be responsible for assisting with invasive plant species removal.

The Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) is hiring nearly 40 full-time seasonal employees for the 2024 summer field season. GLCC is a program administered by the Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP), a non-profit located in Marquette, MI. GLCC crews work and camp as a team of 4 young adults on projects primarily located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with some projects extending regionally. Crew Leaders and Members partner with Tribal, federal, state, and local professionals to accomplish a wide variety of projects including tree planting, trail building, forest management, coastal restoration, invasive species treatment, stormwater management, wildfire risk reduction, e-waste and scrap tire recycling, and training for natural disaster response.
Additionally, GLCC is hiring four “specialty crews” who will focus on single projects for the summer including assisting Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s Natural Resource Dept., forestry and trail work with the Ottawa National Forest, drone inventory of culverts with Trout Unlimited, and a wildfire prevention crew.

The Native Land Conservancy is seeking applications from Native American students for their First Light Fellowship program. To be eligible for this opportunity, you must be a member of a Native American tribal group and be between the ages of 18 – 25. You will develop your own project on an applied topic related to land conservation. For example, a past fellow deployed game cameras to learn about wildlife habitat use. Or maybe you want to learn how wetlands are restored or help restore culturally significant plants. Based on your choice, you will be paired with an expert mentor from Mass Audubon for weekly feedback. You will present your findings at the end of the summer.

The Pigeon River Country State Forest in partnership with the Pigeon River Country Association is looking for an undergraduate student intern for summer 2024.
